Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on the planet and encompasses all species, organisms, and populations. It includes genetic variations among species, organisms, and populations as well as their intricate assortment into communities and ecosystems. It also considers how genes, species, and ecosystems interact as well as their interaction with the environment. In general, there are three different sectors considered within the concept of biodiversity:
- Genetic Diversity – the different genes contained in all individual plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms. Genetic diversity occurs both within and between species.
- Species Diversity – the differences between and within populations of species, as well as between different species.
- Ecosystem Diversity – includes the different habitats, biological communities, and ecological processes. It also includes variation within individual ecosystems.
